History of education in Mozambique: An evolutionary study of the National Education System law, 1983-2018

Abstract

The evolutionary study of the National Education System law between 1983-2018 in Mozambique is closely linked to the country's political and social context, especially after independence in 1975 and subsequent events, such as the civil war and economic reforms.

Quimuenhe (2018, p. 9) emphasizes that because of the civil war that plagued Mozambique from the very beginning, two years after national independence, a war led by RENAMO, states Ferrão (2002, cited by Quimuenhe, 2018, p. 9), the economy suffered from the destruction and effects of the war, droughts, floods, displaced population, refugees, shortage of skilled labor, lack of foreign exchange, among other factors, making it necessary to adjust the overall framework of the education system.

The period from 1983 to 2018 was marked by profound transformations in the National Education System, which sought to expand access to schooling, improve the quality of education, and respond to the demands of a country undergoing reconstruction and modernization.
