Impact of Automatic Promotion on Learning French

Abstract

The practice of automatic promotion is a feature of the primary education system in Mozambique, allowing students to move on to the next grade regardless of their academic performance. Although this practice is not officially applied at the secondary level, it has been shown that some students with insufficient performance in previous grades, such as the 9th grade, are promoted to the 10th grade without having mastered the necessary content, particularly in essential subjects like French.

The teaching of foreign languages, such as French, is based on a solid foundation of knowledge acquired over previous years. When this foundation is not established, students encounter difficulties that compromise further learning, thus creating significant obstacles to their academic development. This dissertation project aims to examine the impact of this practice on the performance of 10th-grade students at Nampula High School.
